10 Best Diversified Bank Stocks For 2014

Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesJob seekers look on while speaking with a job recruiter. Unemployment remains at 7.7 percent and with 3 million fewer jobs than when the recession began. WASHINGTON -- From household wealth to spending at stores, many of the U.S. economy's vital signs have recovered from the damage done by the Great Recession. Home foreclosures and layoffs have dropped to pre-recession levels. Economic output has rebounded. And the Dow Jones industrial average is in record territory. So is the economy back to full health? Not quite. Not with unemployment at 7.7 percent and with 3 million fewer jobs than when the recession began. And while the housing market is improving, that engine of economic growth and job creation still has far to go before it can be declared healthy. Perhaps the best way to think about the U.S. economy is this: After five painful years, it's nearly back to where it started when the recession began. What's different now is that the trends are much healthier. Gone are the fears that the economy could fall into another recession. "We've made a lot of progress," says Michael Gapen, senior U.S. economist at Barclays Capital. The recession officially began in December 2007. It ended in June 2009. Here's a look at ways in which the economy has returned to pre-recession levels and ways it hasn't:

TR: It a one-off isn it? That why we said what could be the source of new ideas? Wee got Richemont, you have Louis Vuitton Mo毛t Hennessy (LVMH).

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Louis Vuitton (LVMH) is one of the world's leading manufacturers and retailers of luxury apparel. Nearly two years ago, we began to analyze the company. We liked the business model, particularly the growth potential as consumers in emerging markets grow more eager to demonstrate their af铿ence. We concluded that the company was well-run by a trustworthy management team, but its valuation did not seem very compelling. Louis Vuitton did not appear to be trading at what we felt was enough of a discount to its intrinsic value. Despite this, we did not abandon the idea. For the next 18 months we kept Louis Vuitton on what we call our inventory list. It was an investment we were comfortable making if the right price presented itself. In April, Louis Vuitton shares declined sharply after shareholders were disappointed by their latest earnings announcement, bringing the stock down to a valuation that we felt was attractive. We acted quickly to purchase shares.

Timber! Shares of Rayonier (RYN) are tumbling like a felled tree after the timber real-estate investment trust missed earnings forecasts this morning, leading to downgrades from at least three investment banks.

    Jim Carlton

Rayonier reported a profit of 44 cents, below forecasts for a 46 cent profit, while revenue came in at $384.8 million, well below estimates for $422 million.

Deutsche Bank’s Mark Wilde and team cut Rayonier from Hold to Sell. They explain why:

While recent commentary around RYN timberland and real estate operations has been quite encouraging, outlook for its Cellulose Specialties business (accounts for 72% of segment EBIT) suggests significant downside risks ahead. RYN said recent contract negotiations suggest a drop in 2014 cellulose specialties (CS) prices and slower transition to CS. Beyond lower cashflows, a sharp price drop could dampen bullish pecialty chemicalsvaluations that have been floated for the segment. Pick-up in timber & real estate markets may mitigate some downside pressure on stock, but they won eliminate it.

Raymond James analyst Collin Mings and slashed their rating on Rayonier to Market Perform from Strong Buy:

We are lowering our rating on Rayonier to Market Perform from Strong Buy as we expect concerns over a slower-than-expected ramp in incremental specialty-grade dissolving pulp sales volumes and 2014 specialty-grade dissolving pulp price negotiations will prove to be a near-term headwind for RYN shares. Longer-term, we continue to believe its cellulose specialties expansion (CSE) project sets the foundation for significant cash flow (and dividend) growth. We remain attracted to the multi-year growth prospects of this business and the barriers-to-entry competitors face to gaining meaningful market share over a sustained period. However, commentary on yesterday conference call made it clear that the timeline for Rayonier to realize the full benefits o
