5 Best Services Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Paul Sancya/APDetroit skyline DETROIT -- A judge cleared Detroit to emerge from bankruptcy Friday, approving a turnaround plan that will require discipline after years of corruption, mismanagement and an exodus of residents brought this one-time industrial powerhouse to financial ruin. "What happened in Detroit must never happen again," Judge Steven Rhodes said in bringing the case to a close a remarkably speedy 16 months after Detroit -- the cradle of the auto industry -- became the biggest city in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy. The plan calls for cutting retiree pensions by 4.5 percent, erasing $7 billion of debt and spending $1.7 billion to demolish thousands of blighted buildings, make the city safer and improve long-neglected basic services. In signing off on the plan, Rhodes made a fervent plea to residents who expressed sorrow and disgust about the city's woes. "Move past your anger. Move past it and join in the work that is necessary to fix this city," he said. "Help your city leaders do that. It is your city."

Move past your anger. Move past it and join in the work that is necessary to fix this city.

While the United States Postal Service may be limping toward extinction, postage itself is far from a dying business. Web-based Stamps.com (NASDAQ: STMP  ) had worried investors and analysts for some time that demand would soften along with the USPS decline, but it's done nearly the opposite. In its most recent quarter, Stamps.com broke company records and showed strong promise in the future. The announcement delighted investors, sending the stock up more than 13% immediately following. But with a relatively rich valuation, the company may only be a buy for opportunistic, growth-happy investors. Here's what you need to know.

4 Things Your Teen Needs to Know About Debt

5 Best Supermarket Stocks For 2015

Getty Images It's been almost 10 years since I donned my bright red cap and gown, graduated from high school and forever put behind me the days of being a "Huskie" -- which, like any other self-conscious teenage girl, I was grateful for. I thought I was ready for college, but there was one thing I was lacking -- financial know-how. And my lack of financial acumen led to a long list of financial mistakes. The problem is that within five years of leaving home, most teens are faced with the decision of taking out student loans, buying a car, signing up for credit cards or even taking out a mortgage. And it's up to parents to instill some wisdom in those bright-eyed, bushy-tailed youths before they learn it the hard way. Your teens shouldn't be burdened with your financial stress, and they definitely don't need to know all of your misdeeds. But they should know the basics of the common financial situations they're soon to encounter. Whether you've done right with your money, made a boatload of financial snafus, or a little bit of both, here are some worthwhile discussions to have with your kids: Student Loans: While student loans are oftentimes a necessary debt, they're still money owed to someone else. And unlike many other forms of debt, this one cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy. If you had student loans, you can help your teens by telling them how long it took you to pay them down, as well as what you had to sacrifice along the way. Car Ownership: If you don't have a car loan, you should let your teenager know your motives for paying in cash or your journey in paying down your car. If you do have a car loan, it might be helpful to explain that it's more than just a monthly payment. Sit down and run the numbers with them, demonstrating the money lost to interest. And it just might be the extra motivation you need to pay it off for good. Credit Cards: If your 18-year-old has a pulse and a mailing address, credit card companies will find him. That's just a fact of life in the good ol' U.S. of A. Your teenagers should know the responsible ways to build credit and the dangers lurking behind every unnecessary swipe. You can try to convince them that credit cards, like debit cards, should be paid off in full each month. If you've ever had credit card debt, your teen doesn't need to know the details, but he should know all the work that went into paying it off. Mortgage: While a mortgage usually isn't seen as a mistake, the timing in getting one can be. Make sure your teen knows the various considerations that go into buying a home, such as the ebbs and flows of the housing market, private mortgage insurance, and interest rates. It's important to stress that there should be no rush to do the deed -- er, rather, a deed. What might be second nature to you is a whole new world for your soon-to-be independent teen. The more he knows about finances, the better. And sharing your personal financial experiences -- the good, the bad and the ugly -- will help. Yes, even that time you bought tickets to Twisted Sister on credit for you and your roommates. Let them learn from your mistakes -- and, in the process, keep them from making a few of their own.

Billionaire Nicholas Schorsch and other managers at RCS Capital Corp. (RCAP) know how to get mergers and acquisitions done before the long Martin Luther King Day weekend.

The group announced plans to buy the independent broker-dealer J.P. Turner of Atlanta for $27 million, one day after reporting plans to buy Cetera Financial Group for $1.15 billion.

J.P. Turner has about 400 financial advisors and 50 insurance agents, according to the latest Investment Advisor survey, vs. 6,600 advisors at Cetera.

The deal “represents another important step in realizing RCAP’s strategic vision to become the leading financial-services firm focused on the direct-investment sector,” Schorsch, who is executive chairman of RCAP, said in the statement.

Industry observers generally agree, but point out such growth does involve some conflicting business interests that can get “tricky” at times.

“This reminds me of a quote from Eric Schwartz, chairman and CEO of Cambridge Investment Research,” said recruiter Jonathan Henschen, in an interview with ThinkAdvisor.

Hot Insurance Stocks To Watch Right Now: Manulife Financial Corp (MFC)

Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC) is a Canada-based financial services group with principal operations in Asia, Canada and the United States. The Company segments are Asia, Canadian and U.S. Divisions and the Corporate and Other segment. The Company international network agents and distribution partners offers financial protection and wealth management products and services to clients. It also provides asset management services to institutional customers. In January 2013, the Company acquired Benesure Canada Inc. In August 2013, John Hancock, the United States division of the Company, announced that it has acquired Landmark Square in Long Beach, California. In December 2013, MFC announced its subsidiary, Manulife (International) Limited, had completed the transaction to sell its life insurance business in Taiwan to CTBC Life Insurance Co., Ltd. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe] est Canadian life insurer by market capitalization, offering asset management, wealth management and financial services to customers in Asia, Canada and the U.S. However, the company annuity and segregated fund business has suffered over the past two years, due to the low interest rate environment, leading to a decline in earnings and operating results. Nonetheless, the firm has been undergoing some changes throughout 2013 and management expects profitability to increase for fiscal 2014, despite its underperformance during fourth quarter fiscal 2013. Thus, many investment gurus like George Soros (Trades, Portfolio) and Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) hedge fund remain bullish about Manulife future outlook, evidenced by their shares purchased in the past quarter.

    Of Hedging and Repricing

Manulife capital sensitivity and volatile earnings have made it difficult for the company to maintain steady growth prospects in the past, but quarter four's earnings report showed improvements in some aspects, especially regarding EPS growth, which jumped 73% year over year, closing at $1.62 per share. This is largely due to the company recent strategy of hedging two-thirds of its variable annuity business, and looking forward all newly written businesses in this segment will be hedged. Furthermore, the firm has been gradually trading most of its short-term bonds for long-term bonds, which will improve the bond duration of its investment portfolio, thereby reducing earning sensitivity. While insurance sales were weak for 2013, declining 13% from 2012 and 32% year over year for the quarter, Manulife shift towards expanding its wealth management business (wealth sales increased 37% over the past fiscal year) and mutual fund sales should help offset declines in the future.

In fact, today the company announced that it will be launching a new universal life product for the Canadian market called Manulife UL by May 26 of this year. The new

Air Canada, the nation largest airline, surged 7.2 percent after reducing costs. Manulife Financial Corp. (MFC), Canada largest insurer, increased 2.6 percent for a fourth day of gains. Trilogy Energy Corp. plunged 9.8 percent after reporting a loss as sales declined. Detour Gold Corp. plunged 18 percent after saying it will not meet its 2013 production targets. Centerra Gold Inc. and HudBay Minerals Inc. sank at least 3.7 percent as gold dropped to a three-week low in New York.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Manulife Financial (MFC) is another stock that's forming an ascending triangle pattern right now. In the case of this $33 billion Canadian financial services firm, resistance comes into play at $18, a price level that's acted as a ceiling for shares since all the way back in July. The buy signal comes on a move through that $18 barrier.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Triangles, and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $18 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

After it happens, I'd recommend keeping a protective stop at $16.50.

Top Construction Material Stocks To Invest In Right Now

In her preconference session Sunday night at the Schwab Impact conference in Washington, Liz Ann Sonders displayed a telling slide showing the widening gap among U.S. banks between their high levels of deposits, which have been “soaring, thanks to the Fed,” and their stubbornly low levels of actually making loans.

So what will lead banks to start lending?

In an interview the following day, Schwab's chief investment strategist suggested that it may turn out that “animal spirits will shake the banks loose.” She argued that banks are already in “pretty loose territory,” and that “if your competitors are lending you’ll start lending.” She said that overall, the banks were “in great shape,” there there was “plenty of pent-up demand,” and that the rules were “not yet written” on Dodd-Frank implementation of stricter bank regulation.

She also indicated that home prices would “probably boom” in the fourth quarter of 2013, though she didn’t specifically tie that rise to any forecast of increased bank lending. However, if the banks do start lending, that could be the “next positive surprise” for the markets and economy. She tempered that optimism with a caveat, saying it “could be problematic” if velocity picks up, which could then “run the risk of inflation.”

Nigeria reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.
